【People】 The Ho-Am Foundation 2016 Ho-Am Prize

The Ho-Am Prize ceremony was held on June 1st at the Ho-Am Art Hall in downtown Seoul. The Prize was established in 1994 by Kun-Hee Lee, the Chairman of Samsung. It is presented in five categories: Science, Engineering, Medicine, The Arts and Community Service. A special prize may also be given to persons who have made major contributions to Korea's cultural and social advancement that transcend natinal and racial boundaries.

This year, the 2016 Ho-Am Prize in Science is awareded to Dr. Myungshik Kim, professor at Imperial College London in the U.K, who substantiated the quantum commutation rules through quantum optics experiments, thereby contributing to the foundations of quantum mechanics. He has been leading the area of quantum informatics including quantum computing and quantum cryptography, which will have significant impact on the future of the mankind.

The recipient of 2016 Ho-Am Prize in Engineering is Dr. Jun Ho Oh, professor at KAIST, who has led Korean robotics engineering to the global level by developing the first humanoid robot 'Hubo' driven by their proprietary technology. In 2015, Dr. Oh and his team developed DRC Hubo to participate in DARPA Robotics Challenge defeating all of the contestants from many other leading countries in the field of humanoid robotics such as the U.S., Germany and Japan.

In Medicine, Dr. Larry W. Kwak, professor at the City of Hope National Medical Center in the U.S., has been selected as this year's resipient. Dr. Kwak developed therapeutic vaccine for lymphoma which proved its efficacy with patients in clinical trials fot the first time in the world. Dr. Kwak's findings are widely expected to significantly contribute to the development of a novel type of the therapeutics for cancer treatment in the yaers to come.

The honor of the 2016 Ho-Am Prize in The Arts goes to peoet Tong-gyu Hwang, Professor Emeitus at Seoul National University, who is admired for his relentless writing and enthusiasm for poetry. Since his debut at the age of 20, he has constantly led the efforts to diversify Korean poetic structures and poetic themes which resulted in expanding the horizon of modern Korean poetry.

The recipients in Community Service are Hyun Soo Kim and Soon Sil Cho, co-directors of Wahala Community, who have been looking after at-risk street youths with love and care for 22 years. The couple has extended a warm hand of trust and compassion to some 1,000 youths neglected by parents and schools, and broken by family discord. With their help, these youngsters found their way back to becoming sound members fo society while finding value in life.
