다마(多摩) 청소년 오케스트라는 1996년 3월 도쿄의 각 시에서 공모하여 70명의 청소년(초등학교 3학년~대학생)으로 발족됐다. 그 이후 청소년 오케스트라의 수준 높은 연주와 활동 취지가 높이 평가되어 문화청, 다마시 문화진흥재단, 다마교류센터, 마을조성펀드 등의 공적 지원, 공동주최 의뢰를 받는 등 실적을 쌓아왔다.
매년 봄・가을공연에서는 국내외에서 활약 중인 아티스트와 협연을 하여, 2002년 6월 바이올리니스트 고토 미도리(五嶋みどり)씨, 피아니스트 오이가와 고지(及川浩治)씨와 교류연주회가 열렸다. 2005년 7월에는 도쿄예술극장에서 고토 미도리와 함께 출연했다. 또한 2006년 10월 정기연주회에서 차이코프스키 국제콩쿨 톱스타 가와쿠보 다마키(川久保賜紀)씨와 차이코프스키의 바이올린 콘체르트를 협연하고, 메인 곡으로 지휘자 이마무라 치카라(今村能) 씨를 맞이해 브람스 교향곡 제1번을 연주해 극찬을 받았다.
2007년 봄 멤버들이 염원했던 독일 연주 투어에서는 5번의 콘서트에 성공함으로써, 청소년 국제교류와 홈스테이 등을 통한 문화교류를 통해 큰 성과를 올렸다. 또한 같은 해 '요코하마 미나토미라이홀'에서 개최된 가을 정기연주회에서 바이올리니스트 이시다 야스나오(石田泰尚)씨와 '베토벤 바이올린 협주곡'을 협연하여 청소년들의 영감으로 충만한 연주가 화제를 모았다.
2008년 여름, 다마시의 주최로서 독일의 청소년 오케스트라를 맞아 우정 자선콘서트를 개최해 청소년 오케스트라를 통한 문화교류와 국제교류 등 사회적인 역할에도 기여하고 있다.
