多摩ユースオーケストラは、1996年3月、東京都の各市より公募による70名の青少年(小学3年生～大学生)で発足した。青少年オーケストラとしての演奏水準の高さと活動の主旨が評価を得て、文化庁、多摩市文化振興財団、多摩交流センター、まちづくりファンドなどの公的助成や共催の採択を受けるなど実績を重ねた。
毎年の春、秋公演では国内外で活躍のアーティストとの共演も行い、2002年6月にはヴァイオリニスト五嶋みどりさん、ピアニスト及川浩治さんとの交流演奏会が実施された。2005年7月には東京芸術劇場において、五嶋みどりさんと共演した。また2006年10月の定期演奏会では、チャイコフスキー国際コンクール最高位の川久保賜紀さんとチャイコフスキーのヴァイオリンコンツェルトを共演し、さらには、メイン曲として、指揮者今村能氏を迎え、ブラームス交響曲第一番に取り組み、青少年管弦楽団として高水準の演奏が絶賛された。
2007年春、メンバー念願のドイツ演奏ツアーにて、5回のコンサートを成功させ、青少年国際交流とホームステイなど文化交流を果たし大きな成果を上げた。また、同年秋の定期演奏会では、「横浜みなとみらいホール」にて、ヴァイオリニスト石田泰尚さんと、「ベートーヴェン ヴァイオリン協奏曲」を共演し、青少年たちのスピリチュアルで活き活きとした演奏が話題となった。
2008年夏には、多摩市にてホストオーケストラとしてドイツからのユースオーケストラを迎えてフレンドシップチャリティコンサートを開催し、青少年オーケストラとして文化交流、国際交流など、社会的にも役割を果たしている。
