Origata is a traditional art of folding Japanese Washi Paper to wrap gifts and make decorations for ceremonial events. It is the origin of amusement 'Origami paper craft' but Origata(Art protocol) was lost after World War 2.

Single paper is used folding many times to form significant shape to identify the gifts inside the wrapping. A paper is never cut nor using glue while making Origata. In principle the paper is always white traditionally considered as elegance and refinement. Origata is an art with thoughtful considerations for intended recipients using time and efforts. In short it is to wrap your heart through gift process.

Origata was developed about 600 years ago as a part of complex system of etiquette for gift giving only practiced among top class Samurai Society and never disclosed to outside. The 3rd Shogun Yoshimitsu Ashikaga(足利義満) of Muromachi Period in Kyoto appointed Ise family to develop protocol for upper Samurai class to identify themselves.

In Edo period (1764-1800), Sadatake Ise(伊勢貞丈), the desendant of Ise family who was the authority of study for etiquette and protocol for both Court and Samurai society devoted his entire life to disclose all principles of their secret knowledges as protocols become abused among common people at theat time. He wrote over 170 books.

One of his book is 'Houketsu zusetsu(包結図説)', a Guide book for Wrapping Origata and Musubi Knot which was published in 1840 in wood block printings. In this book, discipline and philosophy of Origata ans Knot are clearly described along with simple drawings.
