日本語 English페르디낭 슈발(Ferdinand Cheval)은 프랑스에서 태어났다. 그가 마흔 세살 때 일하던 중 자빠질 뻔했는데, 발에 걸렸던 돌을 본 그는 그 기묘한 생김새에 매료되어 집으로 가져갔다. 다음날도 같은 장소를 지나게 되었는데 더 신기한 돌이 발견되어 집으로 가지고 돌아갔다. 그는 이것을 계기로 취미삼아 돌을 수집하기 시작했고 밤에는 돌들을 쌓아갔다. 그러나 마을 주민들은 혼자서 괴상한 것을 만들고 있는 그를 바보 취급했다. 상사였던 우체국장도 그를 만류했지만 슈발은 그 취미에 대한 열정을 포기하지 않았다.
1912년 33년에 걸쳐 페르디낭 슈발의 '꿈의 궁전'이 완성되었다. 그리고 1969년 프랑스 정부에 의해 이긍전은 문화재로 등록되었다.
