The first train has rolled through the world's longest railway tunnel. The 57 km long Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland is not yet finished, but test driving off.
When the tunnel is ready for traffic, trains will only spend about 20 minutes on the route. But Friday's test trains had to have six hours to get from Bodio in Canton Ticino to Erstfeld Uri, informed the company that builds the tunnel.
The reason for this is that the work is in full swing at several locations inside the tunnel. During the fall, erecting the Gotthard Base Tunnel is scheduled to be completed, and in 2016 it opened to traffic with trains traveling up to 220 km/h.
